The Southwest is full of failed projects: empty company towns, unsold resorts, abandoned military sites. Restos looks at these leftovers not as ruins or nostalgia but as proof.

Places like Slab City, Bombay Beach, Vulture City, Desert Center, Two Guns grew from specific ideas—retirement havens, training grounds, farms, tourist traps. When those ideas failed, the buildings stayed. The desert doesn't reclaim them quickly; they remain bleached and warped.

What matters is not the decay but that people still live in some of these places by choice. Living in someone else's abandoned dream says more about freedom, need, and the American landscape than any new development.
